Day 2: Ascent & Climb via the Giant’s Tooth and Punta Graham
Ascent height difference: 650 m
Ascent / descent time: 6-8 h
Wake up in the refuge early and head towards the Giant’s Tooth. Walk on an easy track until you reach the steep gully that marks the start of the wall leading to the famous Dent du Géant “gum.” The terrain is mixed with stretches of snow and easy rock passages. At the base of the Gengiva, begin the actual climbing section with sustained passages (IV-V degree) and significant exposure. Fixed ropes help negotiate the most demanding parts.
The climb is divided into 6 rope pitches:
– Pitch 1: An IV pitch to reach the west wall.
– Pitch 2: A simpler III pitch that leads to a solid bolt stop where fixed ropes begin.
– Pitch 3: A subsequent IV pitch with impressive exposure and moderate difficulty.
– Pitch 4: An athletic and tiring V+ pitch starting on the ridge, finishing with an ascending blade-crack into a vertical wall-dihedral.
– Pitch 5: A continuing IV+ pitch along the ridge towards Punta Sella (4,009 m).
– Pitch 6: A IV pitch climbing a short, smooth slab that reaches the south-west peak at the top of Punta Sella (4,009 m).
Finally, traverse an aerial ridge slightly downhill; a vertical jump of about 4 m leads to a fixed rope section that brings you to the notch between the two peaks and onto Punta Graham (4,014 m).
For the descent, rappel up to the “Gum” and then follow the normal route of ascent. Conclude the day with a well-deserved celebratory beer at the Torino Refuge and take the cable car back to the starting parking lot.
